Romance is a subgenre that has many different branches to appeal to the many different readers in this niche. One such branch is dark romance, with its darker themes and twisty plots. These two points are often what make this niche appealing to readers. Others might wonder about the appeal behind this niche, which is why we at ShearingHome created this little blog to go over this niche and discuss some of our books that fall under this niche more so than the typical action-romance we are known for writing.

What are dark romance books?
Dark romance books are those stories with darker themes and more mature content. A quick way to tell if a story is a dark romance book is if it has a content warning from the author in the book description when you buy the book or has a content warning before the story. Dark romance stories can vary in their topics and include:
Morally gray characters
Plots with trauma and violence
There are many niches that have these dark undertones, meaning you can find a wide variety of plot lines that fall under the umbrella of dark romance. Some common tropes you can find in this alluring sub-genre include:
Mafia
Stalking
Kidnapping
Motorcycle club (MC)
Anti-hero
Does ShearingHome have any dark romance books?
ShearingHome definitely has dark elements in many of our books, with some aligning more with the dark romance niche than the action-adventure romance. For example, Perfectly Traumatized (if the title isn't a dead giveaway) is one of our more dark romance stories. Sure, it has action elements, but both of our leads are dealing with their own past traumas. But, in many of our stories, there are kidnappings, mafia encounters, and plots with trauma and violence.
Why does ShearingHome have books with dark romance?
While some may steer clear of dark romance, as every reader has different interests, the reason that dark romance elements have made their way into many of our stories is that they add a lot more depth to each of our characters. Life isn't always sunshine and rainbows, so having stories that were pure sunshine and rainbows didn't work well with our vision for the storyline. The plus side though, is that many of our characters get the happy ending they deserve. Several of our characters find the true love they never thought they'd find and join the family — even if they aren't all related by blood.
